Psychology
Why is Psychology important?
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and human behaviour. Psychologists seek to understand why people think, feel and behave the way they do and how behaviour is influenced by biological, cognitive and social factors. Psychology helps students to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others, and to make sense of real-world issues such as obedience, memory, crime on behaviour and mental health.
Psychology is a subject for students with an inquisitive and analytical mind who are interested in people and how they behave. It encourages curiosity, critical thinking and the ability to evaluate evidence, making it a highly respected and relevant subject.
What is the aim of Psychology curriculum at Oaklands?
The Psychology curriculum at Oaklands aims to develop students’ understanding of human behaviour through scientific investigation and research. Students are encouraged to think critically, analyse psychological evidence and evaluate different explanations for behaviour. Throughout the course, students will develop key skills including analysis, evaluation, interpretation of data and extended writing, preparing them for further study. They also complete six praticals over the two years to enhance their understanding of research methodology and bridge the gap between theory and practise.
How is the curriculum in Psychology structured?
Psychology is offered as a subject at KS5 (A Level). The curriculum is structured to introduce students to core psychological concepts, research methods and key debates within the subject, with increasing depth and complexity as students progress. In year 1, students study different psychological perspectives and in year 2, they apply this to clinical and criminal psychology.
