Why is Physical Education important?

Physical Education is important as it supports students to become physically confident in a way which promotes healthy, active lifestyles. A high quality physical education programme at Oaklands inspires students to succeed and excel in physically demanding activities and competitive sports. Opportunities to compete in sports and other activities builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect. 

What is the aim of PE curriculum at Oaklands?

 

The aim of the PE curriculum at Oaklands School is to support students to lead healthy active lives by ensuring that they are physically active for a sustained period of time and that they understand the benefits that this brings. The curriculum develops competence to excel in a broad range of activities and develops student leadership. It also allows students to engage in competitive sports and activities. 

 

How is the curriculum in PE structured? 

Key Stage 3

Students develop their skills, techniques and tactics in both team and individual sports. They analyse their performance and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Students continue to improve technique, creativity and performance in aesthetic activities such as gymnastics, dance and athletics. Students take part in outdoor activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work as a team, building on trust, and developing skills to solve problems. Students develop knowledge and understanding of the components of fitness and demonstrate a range of training methods to improve personal goals and promote a healthy active lifestyle. 

Key Stage 4 Core PE:

Students continue to develop complex skills, techniques, strategies and tactics in both individual and team sports. Students analyse performances and compare with previous to improve and achieve their personal best. Health related fitness is a fundamental unit to KS4 core PE so students gain a deeper understanding of the benefits and importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle.

KS4 Qualification title: Cambridge National Level 1 and 2 in sports studies. 

Unit R051: Contemporary issues in sport:

Students explore a range of topical and contemporary issues in sport, such as participation levels and barriers, promoting values and ethical behaviour, and how sport contributes to society as a whole beyond simply providing entertainment.

Unit RO52: Developing sports skills:

Students try out a range of sports-related skills and techniques, including different practice methods for improving both their own performance and that of others. They develop their knowledge of the use of tactics and strategies in both individual and team sporting activities as well as their understanding of the rules, enabling them to carry out a number of officiating roles within the activities.

Unit RO53: Sports Leadership:

Students learn about some of the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to be an effective sport leader. They put their knowledge into practice by planning and delivering safe and effective sporting activity sessions. Afterwards they review their performance.

Unit RO56: Outdoor Activities

Students find out about a wide range of outdoor and adventure activities and the organisations that provide access to them. Through planning and participating in these types of activities they will learn about the risks involved and gain an understanding of health and safety, risk assessments and the importance of detailed planning for various scenarios and challenging environments. This will also help them develop their communication, decision-making and leadership skills.

KS5 Qualification title: Btec National Extended Diploma in Sports Science. 

The Extended Diploma in Sport Science is a two year programme that is equivalent to three A Levels. The course deals with the scientific themes and concepts of sport science and aims to provide studies in sport which are directly related to the changing needs of employers in specific areas of the sport science industry.

Year 1: Anatomy and Physiology, Sports Psychology, Research Methods, Fitness Testing, Exercise Health & Lifestyle, Sports Nutrition, Practical Team Sport and Exercise for specific groups

Year 2: Sports Biomechanics, Sport & Exercise Massage, Current Issues in Sport, Research Project, Sports Coaching, Applied Sport Psychology, Applied Sport Physiology, Fitness Testing & Programming and Sport Injuries

Practical tips / activities for parents to support learning at home

  • Parents can encourage students to attend extra curricular sports to further improve skills development. 
  • Parents can further support students by explaining the importance of physical education and its benefits to physical and mental health. 
  • Ensure that students have PE kit ready for lessons.
  • Ensure that those students who are taking the KS4/5 qualifications, that coursework is met by the deadlines set.
