ENGLISH

The English Department at Oaklands School is committed to ensuring that all students can access a wide-ranging curriculum.

Units are planned to ensure progression from year 7 to Year 11 in the full range of content and skill areas, such as narrative writing, poetry analysis, study of Shakespeare and an understanding of media texts.

This is achieved by teachers working closely together as a department team, both in terms of preparing resources and sharing teaching ideas, and by having strong links with other departments, such as Media and Drama, and the Library.

The department has fully embraced the use of interactive technology since September 2004 when each of the four English rooms was equipped with an interactive whiteboard.  Now teachers can use sound, images, film clips and worksheets (that work with conventional printed resources) to help students to enjoy and more easily access the curriculum whatever their ability or language background.

In KS3, pupils who need additional help in developing their literacy skills join our corrective reading, progress units, or reading partner schemes.

In KS4, we aim to enter all pupils for both English and English Literature GCSE examinations.
